One day, his neighbor's young daughter, Mathilda (Natalie Portman), knocks on his door and begs for refuge to escape a deadly threat. It turns out that Mathilda's father was an informant for the police and, after skimming a small stash of drugs, was targeted by the corrupt DEA agent Stansfield (Gary Oldman), who had the entire family executed. Saved by Léon, Mathilda begins to take care of his household and teaches him to read, while Léon trains her in the use of firearms. The two grow close, and a unique bond—something akin to love—develops between them. Mathilda follows Stansfield on her own to avenge her family and is captured. Léon arrives just in time to save her. They move again, but Mathilda eventually falls into Stansfield's hands once more. Léon takes down a squad of police officers, rescues her again, and sends her through an air duct to escape, instructing her to retrieve the money he had saved. Léon then disguises himself as a police officer to slip through the cordon, but the cunning Stansfield sees through the ruse, forcing Léon to detonate the explosives strapped to his body.
